Choose Your Seat!
Our staff regularly seeks out innovations in teaching and employs new strategies in order to meet the needs of all learners in our classes. This fall, Christie Allen-Down and Sarah Macciola introduced alternative seating in second grade.
Using prior teaching experiences, as well as current educational research, the second grade team implemented a balance of traditional and alternative seating in their classrooms. These include balance balls, wiggle seats, beanbag chairs, floor cushions, a stand up table and kneeling table. These options are designed to engage students in the learning process as well as improve retention, focus and attention spans.
Students travel throughout their learning day working in a variety of different settings. A visitor to the classroom will see children working on athletic balls, reading on beanbags, kneeling at low tables to work with a partner, collaborating in small groups at standing tables, writing at their desks independently, or even sitting on the floor with their classroom Chromebook. The students love having choice in their seating and benefit from opportunities to move their bodies throughout the day. The teachers delivered clear expectations and boundaries from the beginning to help this implementation be successful and enjoyable for all.
Christie says, “Sarah and I are very proud of what we’re doing and our students love it. We are seeing great results in improved attention and engagement.”
