Why Do We Need An Annual Fund?

Last month at Spring Fling, Scott Powell shared his enthusiasm for our school and for the Annual Fund campaign.  Here is how his family came to attend MGCS and why they support the Annual Fund.

We moved to Wilmington nearly 3 years ago with our children Emily (9) and Jacob (6).   After checking out multiple schools, our realtor and fellow MGCS dad , Chris Spivey suggested we check out Myrtle Grove Christian School.  We toured the school and fell in love with it.   We’ve had a great experience here and can’t imagine sending our kids anywhere else. Once enrolled, I began to notice the Annual Fund “asks”.  Walking into the buildings, I saw a large thermometer recording gifts, I received mailings asking for support and, I attended the Spring Fling fundraiser.  I knew I was already paying tuition every month so I wanted to understand why we needed an Annual Fund.

I spoke with Stacey Miller, Head of School, and he walked me through the operating budget, his conservative strategy on building the budget, and the Annual Fund campaign goals.  Annual Fund giving covers three primary items:

CAPITAL PURCHASES

These purchases include things like smart boards and student response systems,  the electronic door locking system, and development of  the Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE).

1:1 STUDENT TECHNOLOGY PURCHASES

This includes infrastructure and wiring as well as Chrome Books and mobile computer labs.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Money from the Annual Fund provides tuition assistance for over 30 families each year.  One of our First graders recently sold his toys then added his tooth fairy money to that total and made a gift t other Annual Fund so that “other kids can come to school here too”.  His example is humbling.

Over 30 years ago, a small and dedicated group of people, through their investment of time, money and force of will, created a place for us and our children.  We are surely thankful that they did!  But now the mantle has passed to a new generation.  The responsibility to steward MGCS now falls to us.   We ask that you prayerfully consider how you can support our Annual Fund campaign to help us preserve this place for our kids and the kids who will attend our great school in the years to come, a special place where their lights can shine!
